Thin Client Upgrade 6.2.7412

June 28th, 2010 by

Migrated previous 2X Thin Client server from Ubuntu Linux 9.10 to a virtualized Windows Server 2003 R2 box due to the software manufacturers discontinued support for the Linux platform. Upgraded to 2X Thin Client server 6.2 r7412 which has support for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) including VMWare View, Citrix XenServer, and 2X Virtual Desktop Server.  To verify you are booting from the new server, your login screen should match this:

Submitting “Tech Request”

May 3rd, 2010 by

When submitting a “MyTechDesk” (MTD) tech request please give as much information as possible in the description:

Describe the issue in detail using these guidelines:

1)What piece of equipment are you using when receiving the error? (Type – Brand – Model)
e.g. Printer – Hewlett Packard – Laserjet 4200

2)What task are you performing when receiving the error?
e.g. “Inputting grades in Easy Grade Pro” -or- “Inserting a DVD” -not- “I didn’t do anything, I swear!”

3) In what application or function do you receive the error?
e.g. “Easy Grade Pro” -or- “Making copies at the copier”

4) What error messages does the piece of equipment report?
Please write down any error messages you receive – verbatim! It makes it much easier to Google it if I need to research the issue.  thanks!

My Tech Desk

May 3rd, 2010 by

The old work order system (HEAT) has been retired, and we have officially moved to the “MyTechDesk” (MTD) system for Tech work Requests.  To submit a TECH REQUEST please go to http://www.mytechdesk.org and login using your typical username and password.  All outstanding HEAT work requests have been transferred, so if you think that you have a current unfulfilled work request please login to MTD to check its status – if for some reason it did not transfer, please submit another.  Thank You!

eBackpack Web Folders

April 15th, 2010 by

Many of you noticed an issue when adding ebackpack as a “Network Place” on the thin client computers.  This is due to the recent upgrade to a 64 bit operating system on all the thin client servers. We needed to upgrade the server to 64 bit to fix several other issues and as a result it “broke” the web folders support for ebackpack.  Microsoft does  not support WebDAV (what ebackpack uses) on 64 bit platforms and has no plans to make a patch. So I will have to install an additional application to make this work. I am in the middle of testing this app to make sure it works and doesn’t “break” anything else. I plan to install the final on the production server Friday after hours, so come Monday this issue should be resolved. I will also create documentation as the procedure for creating web folders as well as uploading grades will change.  Check the “How-To” page for the aforementioned documentation.
Thank you for your patience!

New Work Order System

April 9th, 2010 by

The District has switched to a new more user friendly work order system.  It is all web based meaning you can get to the site from any web enabled computer or device (such as your iPhone). It requires you to login to submit a work request and asks for three things. First is the “Groupname” which is GUHSD. Then it asks for a username and password which is the same as your Attendance and Performance Profile username and password.  This will allow you to submit work requests, as well as log in to see status updates and view messages sent from the tech people responsible for the request. This should help streamline the work-flow and get rid of some of the problems associated with the old (HEAT) work order system….Best part of all:  IT WAS FREE!  Great for these economically tough times!  LINK:  My Tech Desk Bookmark it!

MS Office 2007 Errors

April 7th, 2010 by

IMPORTANT! This affects all users with Office 2007 and MathType 6.5 installed on their computers.  This includes all THIN CLIENT users and a majority of FITT tablet users.

By default Microsoft will disable any “Untrusted” publishers of security certificates and Macros, and Office applications upon first launch will disable the MathType software. What does this mean? It means you might not be able to print or do other functions such as Cut, Copy, and Paste unless you follow the directions in this document:  Enabling Macros in Office 2007***

****The document is already on the Thin Client users’ desktop!!

ThinClient Printing

February 4th, 2010 by

We experienced some problems printing to existing printers from the NEW ThinClient server that was mentioned in the previous post.  As of this moment I believe the issue to be resolved, however if you are still experiencing an issue with your printers, please try re-adding it using the instructions found on this web site in the “How-To” section.

Computer Upgrade

February 3rd, 2010 by

The servers to which ThinClient terminals connect have been upgraded.  They now have increased resources that should significantly increase performance for the end user. For a nominal cost, Grossmont High School effectively upgraded hundreds of its staff and student workstations!
